GOOD RESULTS, BUT CEO ADDS A CAUTIONARY NOTE
Party Gaming's results announcement had them front and centre in the UK financial and business press this week, with CEO Richard Segal producing great results, but dampening enthusiasm with the comment that the online gambling boom may be starting to slow down.
Segal's pessimistic view sent the stock price southwards by almost 37 percent, marking the shares down from 156¾p to 121p in the first minutes of trading with more than 8 million shares changing hands, and seriously depressing the stock for the rest of the week.
Nevertheless, the company, which runs the world's most popular online poker site PartyPoker, saw stunning growth in the first half of the year as first-half profit rose 25 percent. Net income increased to $171 million from $136.5 million a year earlier, the Gibraltar- based company said in a statement. Profits rose to $186.3m from $146.6m a year ago
PartyGaming controls about 54 percent of the online poker market, which according to Christensen Capital Advisors has grown from $90 million in 2002 to $1 billion in 2004. Analysts say growth in the industry will outweigh any potential regulatory concerns. The company makes 87 percent of its revenue in the U.S.

Ayre has confirmed that this September or October Bodog.com will be releasing a new generation of the firm's proprietary poker system, and promises that the change will be the most significant switch in how poker is played on the 'Net in the last half decade.
Ayre says that the "Bodog Interface" will create a paradigm shift that will likely cause ripples through the industry.

Chuck Blount: Digging into the overstuffed poker mailbag
I answer every e-mail as quickly as possible, but one of the things that perplexes me is when I receive multiple e-mails that all touch upon the same topic. It makes me think that I've failed to address a key point.
Here are some answers to the most common queries in my mailbag:
You wrote about tournament poker, but failed to mention where we can play these low buy-in tournaments and so forth. Any recommendations?
It depends on where you live, and since it's likely you're in South Texas, your options are slim: You are pretty much limited to playing online. There are dozens of online poker sites available to anybody with a computer and an Internet connection. They all have tournaments that you can enter for as low as $5, and some even let you play for free for a shot at real prize money. Unfortunately, casinos can't financially justify spreading low-cost tournaments, so playing in a casino tournament will likely require you to post a buy-in for a minimum of $35 and up.

Budinger's poker face
KNOW WHEN TO HOLD EM
Chase Budinger loves poker. He loves the challenge of the card game. He loves the strategy, the deception and the fact that no matter how well you play you are at the mercy of the cards.
One can only assume that Chase must be one heck of a bluffer when he’s playing cards because he did not let anyone know exactly what was going on during recruiting. After the commitment he admitted that he had long favored the Wildcats.
“Chase was very clear,” said Chase’s father Duncan. “He’s been a Wildcat fan since he was a little kid. To be able to play there is a dream.”

Aussie wins poker championship
After a marathon 15-hour final round, an Australian chiropractor turned professional card player has emerged as the new champion of the World Series of Poker. The victory earned him $7.5 million and placed him, for the moment, atop a wave of poker-mania that in the past few years has swept the country.
"How could it not change my life?" 39-year-old Joseph Hachem, his face pasty after a long night and morning in a darkened upstairs card room of Binion's Gambling Hall & Hotel in downtown Las Vegas. "It changes everything."

After a four year absence, poker will return to Adelaide's Skycity Casino, riding a wave of renewed popularity around the world.
On Wednesday the casino opened its new Poker Zone with a Texas Holdem tournament scheduled to host 60 players.
It plans to run games on four nights a week, Wednesday to Saturday, featuring Holdem, Omaha and Manila variations of the game.
Skycity said it closed down the last of its dedicated poker tables in 2001 due to dwindling public interest.
But since then the king of card games - said to be as much about psychology as luck - has enjoyed a worldwide resurgence with regular television coverage for tournaments and extensive internet sites devoted to on-line competition.
Is poker playing into the sports fold?
One of the most-watched events concluded early Saturday morning, although its fans have not had a chance to see it, yet.
While it will be broadcast in multiple increments on ESPN, the leader in cable sports television, most hardly would call this event a sport.
If you haven't guessed it yet, we're talking about poker -- specifically the World Series of Poker, which concluded Saturday at Binion's Gambling Hall & Hotel in Las Vegas.
